Remind yourself of your own wisdom!

Very often I need to be reminded of such things.

Have you ever forgotten advice your past self had already figured out? I have, especially those kinds of things that have high stakes but not enough opportunities to practice so that the newly learned wisdom becomes second nature. When I am able to prepare for such situations, it’s easy to recall the past experiences. Sometimes there is no warning, there is a distraction, or just an awkward setting that doesn’t let my mind connect the dots fast enough. For example, it’s hard to remember “Don’t volunteer personal opinions, espcially if they are negative” when I get really excited in a conversation, and it’s hard to change that because such situations are hard to foresee and hard to notice.

That’s why I have made a tiny project called Wisdom Reader! It helps me, and I hope it helps you too. If you type/paste each piece of advice or wisdom as a separate line in the box and then hit save, the next time you open the same page, it will choose a random one out of them to show you! If you set that page as a homepage, then you’ll be rewarded with insights that your past self has figured out while you are going about your day!

Best of all, this all works completely on-device. This is a static site, so there’s no way for us to store any data on the servers anyway. Instead, everything is saved in LocalStorage and retrieved when the page is reloaded. This does mean that clearing the cache or browsing data will also get rid of your wisdom. Best to keep it all in a text file somewhere else if that does happen.

In case you are interested in making your own version or just want to see the code, it’s on GitHub/volect/wisdom-reader, but you could always just inspect.

If you are looking for good pieces of advice, I suggest wisdom.limo.
